The True North: Before the Group of Seven

End Date:

The True North: Before the Group of Seven exhibit celebrates the centenary of one of Canada's most beloved painters visit to the area, Tom Thomson.

It is believed that Tom Thomson visited the West Parry Sound District in the summer of 1914 while on a canoe trip to Go Home Bay at the cottage of friend and confidant, Dr. James MacCallum. In mid-July, travelling back to Algonquin Park, Thomson paddled in into the mouth of the Seguin River, stopping to stay in the South Channel for a few days. Thomson painted two images during his stay here in Parry Sound, Trestle at Parry Sound, 1914 and Parry Sound Harbour, 1914.

These two artworks are now display on interpretive signs, located along the Rotary Algonquin Fitness Trail, which showcase the District of Parry Sound's appeal for Tom Thomson and provide people with the historical and cultural significance of our beautiful landscape. This project was completed in partnership with the Town of Parry Sound and the Rotary Club.

On July 8, 1917, just as Thomson was reaching ascendancy in his craft, Thomson paddled across Canoe Lake and disappeared. His body surfaced 8 days later. The events surrounding his death still remain a mystery today.

This special exhibit tells the stories of the lives of Thomson and the members of the Group of Seven before the Group was officially established. Tom Thomson, along with the members of the Group of Seven, helped to create a distinct form of Canadian art.

Members of the Group followed in Thomson's footsteps and visited Northern Ontario, finding inspiration in its rugged terrain and iconic landscape. Parry Sound holds a special place for the Group of Seven and the recognizable whispy pine, depicted in many artworks, can be found in many local organizations logos.
