Visitor Services Associate

The Museum on Tower Hill is a small local museum with a great team of staff and volunteers. The Visitor Services Associate will share the responsibilities of working at the front desk. The individual working at the front desk is the first face that visitors see within the Museum, and will conduct themselves in a friendly, positive and helpful manner.

Responsibilities held by the Visitor Service Associate are:

  • Welcome visitors to the Museum and Tower Hill Gardens in a friendly and hospitable manner. 
  • Answering and directing phone calls. 
  • Initiate and complete sales transactions, such as admission sales, gift shop sales and membership sales. 
  • Keep an accurate account of all persons entering the building for security purposes as well as for stake holder reporting. 
  • Balance the gift shop till to zero at the end of each day. This will include balancing cash sales as well as credit and debit sales. 
  • Ensure that all displays, racks cards, brochures and other supplies are well stocked at all times. 
  • Monitoring galleries, ensuring visitors have purchased an admission ticket before entering the galleries. 
  • Help keep the gift shop and galleries neat and clean at all times. This task will include returning moved items to their proper locations, dusting, and picking up lost items. 
  • Understand the general history of the Parry Sound District in order to answer basic visitor questions.
  • Answer visitor questions, and refer more difficult questions to appropriate staff members. 
  • Be aware of their surroundings and report problems to the Curator/Manager. (i.e. water where there shouldn’t be, new signs of damage, etc.) 
  • Assist in directing or controlling guests during emergency situations.
  • Light cleaning duties as required. This typically includes restocking the washrooms, cleaning the washrooms as necessary, dusting the galleries and gift shop, wash the windows as necessary, sweep floors, and keep their work spaces clean. Special projects as they arise.

The Visitor Service Associate will also be responsible for collecting survey responses for evaluations that will be taking place this summer. Project related tasks will include:

  • Monitoring/recording observations on visitor movement.
  • Administering questionnaires to visitors. 
  • Compile the data and formulate a written report on their findings.

Educational Background: The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma and currently be enrolled in a Museums Studies program.

This position is funded by Young Canada Works and the successful candidate must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada:
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Have completed the school year at the start of employment;
  • Have registered as a full-time student in the semester preceding the employment period;
  • Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester immediately following the summer job.
